Kotečnik is known for its 303+ climbing routes ranging in difficulties from 4b to 8c. Climbers from all over the world gather here to practice. But our goal is not the climbing course but the top of Kotecnik.
The easiest way to get to the starting point is to make a turn towards Petrovče on few km out of Celje on the old road Ljubljana – Celje. Then follow the signs for Kasaze pass the pottery shop and Liboje pass the stone-quarry. Drive uphill until you see this sign:
Park somwhere and head in suggested direction past the farmhouse. The path is narrow and goes through a beautiful forest. If you are early enough you will surely enjoy the game of light when sun rays hit the tops of the trees.
Somewhere in the middle of the hike you will see a sign for a cave (jama) written on a tree. After you sniffed around the cave you can continue on the path that goes up and down as we are on the ridge. When you reach the fourth top (750 m) of this ridge you will find a steel box with registration book and a stamp (Savinjska mountain trail). Here you can enjoy the view (Gozdnik, Šmohor, Kamniško – Savinjske Alps...) or head on as there are still four more “tops” of Kotečnik that need to be conquered as you still haven't been on top of Kotecnik (772 m). Unfortunatelly there are no good views from the highest peak. When you are done hiking (and / or observing the climbers) find your way back to the car.
The hike to the top where the registration book is will take about 20 – 30 minutes, for all of the peaks of Kotečnik you need about an hour or so in one way.
