Celjska Koča is a very popular local small skiing center that lately got a brand new hut / hotel. But it's not the hotel that attracts me, it's the way there, in this case Hudičev Graben.

Hudičev Graben (Devil's Ditch) is a small, wild canyon that leads to Celjska Koča. How to get there? Well, try the following, might be the easiest (if you are with a car)*:

Cross river Savinja on the bridge that leads towards Laško. In a minute you will see a gas station on the right. Continue to the traffic lights crossing and take a left accross the bridge and then turn right. Stay on the road and then go under rails again. On your right you will see a fire brigade house. If you don't mind walking on the road for half an hour or so you can leave the car here and continue on foot on the road. Good side of this is, that you can return from Celjska Koča on a »regular« path that ends (and for some starts) right there. If you don't like walking on road you can continue riding on it. In any case you must follow it for about three or four kilometers untill you get to the woods. There are few weekend houses on your left, after last one (about 150 meters) you will notice a path that goes right and towards the woods. Take it, cross the grass plain and soon you'll notice the entrance to Devil's Ditch.

There's a small spring running through it and that means that is more or less slippery all the time. The canyon is pretty narrow and the path leads on both sides,so you must cross the spring quite a few times. Be carefull on those slippery rocks.

The first impression is that you are somewhere in the middle of the journey of »The fellowship of the ring«. Especially after storms and heavy rain, the canyon is really wild and sometimes you must climb above torn down trees and other wood. The path is well protected with iron ropes and pitons, at one point there's even an improvised steel bridge.

Two points are where extra caution won't do harm; you cross the rock on pitons,  hanging out from it and holding on to an iron rope. Be carefull there. Take your time, no need to hurry. The path goes up almost all the time. The canyon itself takes you 30 minutes max, but it's really a great, great experience. You can't believe you are really only a good ten minutes ride from town center. Not something you can experience in many places.

After you come out of Devil's Ditch you have about 40  more minutes through the woods to Celjska Koča. Just make sure you follow markations. When you come to a forrest »road« (end of the steep), go left, pass the rangers watchtower and soon you are on Celjska Koča. Like said at the beginning, there's a hotel. I usually skip it and return on a »regular« path to the car. It's on your right, just two minutes before hotel, clearly marked. Way down here takes you about 35 minutes. If you left the car at the entrance of Devil's Ditch you must return the same way, of course. Going down the canyon takes probably even more effort and cauition. Up or down, you'll enjoy it big time.

* if you want to go on foot the whole way from Celje, follow Savinja on the left bank from Laško bridge and when you come to the road just follow it to the fire brigade house. Rest is already described. That way it will take you approximattely two and a half hours to Celjska Koča.
