Golica is a grassy ridge, one of the most popular destinations in Slovenia. It is most known for vast fields of narcissus that grow there in May and June. It was also an inspiration to one of the most important Slovenian musicians Avsenik and that song became most played Slovenian song of all time.
Our starting point is in Planina pod Golico. To get there follow the signs for Kranj from Ljubljana and then for Jesenice. When you get to Jesenice exit at Hrušica and then drive through town until the sign that will take you to the left. Follow the road to Planina pod Golico until you see a blaze for Golica. Park the car on a small parking place. You now have to choose with path you will take, the steeper one or the easier one. One takes 2 hours, the other 3. We took the steeper path. From the parking space head back to the sign (Golica 2h), cross the stream and follow the road uphill. Soon it will turn on the meadow and then into forest. The path will cross a forest road and will take you to the lower station of the cable railway. Make sure you check if it is operating and be careful when you go beneath the cables. Then just follow the blazes through the forest until about 1500 meters above sea where the forest stops and there are no trees anymore. Hence the name Golica (it would mean »barren land«). Meadows of narcissus start here. There's just a few more minutes of steep trail to the hut now that lays on 1582 m above sea. A spectacular view open from the hut. Triglav, Slovenian highest mountain is so close that you feel like you can touch it. Anyway, rest for a while as there's still half an hour to the top. Maybe try borovničevec, a spirit with blueberries (bilberry brandy). From the hut head up and follow the zig zagues to the top of the ridge and then turn West to reach the top. When you're at the top of the ridge you are on the Slovenian – Austrian border and a beautiful view over Austrian Drava valley with Villach and Klagenfurt opens. Enjoy the view on top. You can head back by the same path or take the longer one (the 3 hours one we didn't take when we started) to make a round hike. Set as favorite Bookmark
