Nanos is highland ridge that separates Vipava and Postojna basin. It's a very popular destination and one of true landmarks on your way to Slovenian sea.
Driving on a highway towards the coast, you must take second exit for Razdrto. That's some ten or fifteen minutes ride after you passed Postojna. After paying toll turn left for Razdrto, a small karst village. Drive straight into the village and then turn left towards the free parking lot by the church. Park your car and cross the bridge above highway and you will come to a starting point where you can take a sip of fresh water. Turn left and then right up the hill. Don't lose your will when you see Nanos and you think it will take you ages to get to the top. After 15 minutes of walking through narrow paths in forest you will come to a crossing; right is the steep path, straight on is the »easy« way. We chose the right one, of course. It takes you through the woods for half an hour or so. Then you come to a rocky part with few pitons and iron ropes. But it's far from being demanding. It's really nice, with rocks and grass patches. In clear weather the views must be fantastic, but low clouds below us didn't give us that pleasure. But still, we were hiking in t-shirts in mid February with sun on our cheeks. Not to mention all spring plants we saw on our way. The path is really nice and I made a decision right there, that this will definitely be just one of my many trips to Nanos. We made a small stop just below the peak, where two giant TV transmission towers stand. Lying in grass, with warm sun on your skin… Pure magic. Strangely we didn't get to feel »burja«, typical wind that blows here more or less all the time. Well, next time. An hour and a half or so after we left the car we were in hut on Nanos. Warm spring weather day was the reason that the hut was close to crowded. As we got recommendations for »jota« from a lot of people that went there, we ordered that dish without hesitation. And were a bit disappointed, to tell the truth. Jota wasn’t as good as we anticipated. After a warm meal a view point awaits you. From the hut take the “Sv. Hieronim” path and you will reach the view point in 10 minutes. Make sure you have enough time and you are in no hurry, for you will want to stay there quite a while. On our way back the church of St. Hieronimo awaits you. We’re taking the “easy” path back to the car. First make sure you visit Grmada that is on the way to St. Hieronim. It’s a peak just some 15 – 20 minutes from hut on Nanos. From there the path starts descending to the already mentioned church. It’s an interesting old rocky building that was unfortunately closed. Still, worth the visit. The “easy” path leads you through patches of grass and rocks before you come to the woods, where you start thinking why is it called the “easy” one. It’s pretty steep and you must really be focused on some parts where to put your foot. Anyhow, there aren’t any pitons or iron ropes here. And it’s a bit longer since it takes you more around. But even so you will be at your car in around two hours, including stops at church and Grmada. Really a very nice hike, also suitable for children in adult companion. Thumbs up. |
